What other leadership positions have you held (AMA, Specialties, PACs)? When?
I currently serve as an ACOG Delegate to the AMA and serve as the Chair of Ob/Gyn PAC. At the state level I am the current Vice-Chair of the Council of the CSMS and serve as the Legislative Chair of CSMS.
Which Program (Campaign School/Candidate Workshop) did you attend?
Candidate Workshop, 2008
Have you run for public office? What was the result?
I ran for the Board of Education in my town in May, 2009 and was elected to my first term.
Have the programs helped in your political careers? How?
I felt the workshop helped me understand the process and gave me insight into preparing my message. Town politics were not that organized and I quickly helped direct the campaign for all the slate of candidates.
Have the programs helped in your medical/advocacy careers? How?
It has given me better understanding of the election cycle process and how decisions and messaging should be constructed. This messaging construction helps at all levels in medicine.
What was the most important thing you learned from AMPAC programs?
The importance of fundraising and how to organize the finance structure. In addition, the importance of messaging and how to communicate that message to the voters.
What would you say to members of the medical community thinking about becoming involved in politics?
Getting involved in local politics is a wonderful opportunity to become a greater part of the community. On the school board I know that the decisions we make will help educate a generation of students that will someday run our country. It is a wonderful honor and privelege and one I think all physicians should partake in.
